5 Ways You Can Help Families Experiencing Homelessness

Located in Salem, for over 20 years St. Francis Homeless Shelter has provided housing and supportive services to families with children and pregnant women who are homeless, while they develop the skills to live independently and find permanent housing. This important resource is primarily provided by dedicated volunteers and they can use your expertise and compassion in a number of ways.

Please consider meeting one of their top 5 needs, as well as sharing this need with everyone you know. A total of 30 volunteers is all that is needed. Together, The HandsOn volunteer community can help our homeless neighbors by supporting St. Francis. How will you join in?

1) St. Francis Shelter is seeking individuals interested in serving on their Board of Directors. A background in the following areas is helpful: community service, youth services, fundraising, finances, legal, and small business. Act Now!

2) Volunteers in teams of 2 care for the children in the children’s library twice monthly for 2 hours on Friday mornings while shelter residents attend classes. Act Now!

3) Volunteers to work in the on-site Library one afternoon each week with children who reside at the Shelter. Library hours are from 4:00pm to 6:00pm Monday thru Friday. Act Now!

4) IT support for an Access based database, built long ago by volunteers, that needs some love and updating. Flexible schedule. Act Now!

5) Volunteer case managers with an open heart to meet with shelter residents on a weekly basis, supporting residents’ self sufficiency plans, providing resource referrals and maintaining shelter policies. No experience needed. Act Now!
